Week of April 19th - 23rd

We have been having fun learning about the fairness and equality with the principles and founding ideals of democracy. We had students engage in a Ancient Athens trial, which left many students questioning how this was the preliminary model of democracy. We have been having fabulous discussions!

In mathematics, we are coming to the end of our Order of Operations investigations and practice. We will be moving on to multiplication, division, area, perimeter and volume.

In Science, we are still exploring air and flight through Bernoulli's principle. However, later this week we will begin to explore how things fly, including birds and insects.

This last week, students explored hyperbole through a writing assignment in connection to our reading of Underground to Canada. This novel is spurring some fabulous discussions, questions, and wonderings; as well as helping use to explore inclusive language.

This past week, we completed our work with multiplying and dividing decimals in math. We continue to read Underground to Canada, discussing the social justice issues and how our society changes over time. We are still exploring cultural understandings and how democracy works as we explore the events and time of Underground to Canada. In science, we are finalizing our understanding of the properties of air, by exploring air compression. To help students continue to understand the abstract principles of air pressure, please help them discover how many wonderful everyday technological advances work in our everyday lives (taps, water pressure, washing machines, driers, tire pumps, gas pumps, and so forth). This coming week we are moving on to learn about Bernoulli's principle of aerodynamics.

Thank you for all that you do! You are sincerely appreciated!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Easton

Before Spring Break

My time is going so fast! It is so hard to believe that at the end of this week, Spring Break is here! Everyone is need of a break, rest, and time away from daily class routine and learning activities. Spring Break begins at 12:00 noon on Friday, March 26th. Classes will resume on Tuesday, April 6th, at 8:30 am.

Over the last two weeks, we have been building up our conceptual understanding of multiplication, decimals, and multiplication of decimals. We have also continued with our investigation into the properties of air and how air moves, with a few experiments. This coming week, we will be conducting three more experiments to help us make inferences about air. Students will need a straw, two empty pop cans, paper, a ruler, tub of water, an index card (or sturdy paper), and a glass.

We have also been working through our understanding of Ancient Athens government forms and how elements of democracy are rooted within our own governance models. We are continuing to work towards our study into the Iroquois Confederacy.

Over the last few weeks, we have also been working on deepening our understanding of how to craft interesting beginnings, suspenseful middles, and extended meaningful endings. Several students are still completing their narratives, and are encouraged to complete these before Spring Break.

Week 24

This past week, we had fun learning more about air movement and finding evidence of air in the world around us. As we continued in our learning, we learned about oxidation, combustion, convection currents, and three sources of heat transfer (Conduction, convection and radiation). We also worked on adding and subtracting decimals to the thousandths place value. In our literacy investigations, we worked on finding themes using S.L.I.M.E. Our continuation in our investigation of democracy, we explored the Athenian government structure.

Thank you for attending our class's Student Conferences, it was a pleasure to meet with you all again. Thank you for your time, and all that you are doing within your role of Leaning Coach. Thank you for all that you do!
